The Picture of a Successful Design Department

Posted Friday August 26th, 2016 by in Analysis + Strategy.

So we’ve looked at the essential elements of both a public relations department and a social media department (part 1 and part 2) from a marketing and communications agency perspective. In this blog, we are turning our attention to the design department.

Many people go into graphic design because they love art and they love making art. Unfortunately, what many people, including those running the company, don’t realize is that there is much more to a successful design department than solely creating the art itself. Of course creativity is essential, but without communication, strategy and authenticity, even the most “creative” marketing efforts can be ineffective.

Therefore, in order to get the most out of your design department, here are some things to ask yourself about the project:

Before you begin:

  • Do you fully understand the message the brand intends to convey?
  • Are you clear on exactly who the target audience is?
  • Have you committed to set and achievable dates for deliverables?

During the creative process:

  • Are you working within the established budget?
  • Are you adhering to deadlines?
  • Do you have open lines of communication with all relevant departments, including the client?
  • Are you using authentic imagery and content?

During the proofing process:

  • Does the design, including all its elements, accurately represent the brand’s persona?
  • What will your audience see in your design?
  • What will your audience feel from your design?
  • Is the message that is coming across the message the brand wants to convey?
  • Have you created a clear call-to-action?

Being a successful designer in an agency requires artistic talent, but it also requires an understanding of the basic principles of marketing and communication as well as the client’s needs.
