Craft Beer Fridays

You might be surprised at how much you can learn about someone by just sharing a drink with them.

Craft Beer Fridays

Posted Friday August 29th, 2014 by in Analysis + Strategy.

Right off the bat, I owe you an apology; this post isn’t about great-tasting beer. But it is about #CraftBeerFriday, and what that means in the greater context of our spectacular team here at GEM.

“So,” you ask, “what’s so special about drinking beer on Fridays?” Well, for the purposes of this particular conversation, it’s not about winding down for the week, or even about team bonding. Rather, I want to highlight the craft nature of the beer we choose to drink.

Last week as we cracked open our cold Friday rewards, it occurred to me that every single one of us despises mass-produced beer. Saying “Budweiser” in our office might be enough to get you to the front of the plank-walking line. Why is that? After a few conversations, it became clear that it has mostly to do with a simple appreciation for quality and complexity.

Knowing the team as I do, I could have guessed as much. Each one of them has an exquisite knack for detail. In fact, the kinds of attributes that make one a fan of craft beer – like the understanding of which quality ingredients must come together to form an exceptional taste – are exactly the characteristics that make one a great member of the GEM team.

So, in your own recruiting efforts, I invite you to take notice of the simple things in life – like the kind of beer your potential recruits enjoy. You might be surprised at how much you can learn about someone by just sharing a drink with them.
